Is your community interested in hosting Australia Day?

The Pyrenees Shire annual Australia Day celebrations are a great opportunity to celebrate our communities.

This year’s ceremony was in Amphitheatre, last year it was in Waubra and Avoca hosted the celebration in 2015. Beaufort hosted Australia Day in 2014.

Council is looking to lock in the location for the next five years, to make sure every community has the chance to host the celebration.

Mayor Ron Eason said hosting the Australia Day celebration could be as small or as big as a community wanted.

“Avoca put on a number of lead-up events in 2015 including Australiana films in the afternoon,” Mayor Eason said.

“Amphitheatre provided a fantastic photographic display and we were able to enjoy the new recreation reserve building,” he said.

“Council will also fund a visit from the mobile petting zoo, which has been a huge hit with the children in the past two years.”

Community groups need to be able to provide a venue and be able to arrange a morning or afternoon tea or barbecue at a time of day that suits the community with all costs for food covered by Council.

Council organises the formal part of the celebration with the opportunity for the community to showcase their town with art, photographic or historical displays, or any other activity that highlights the assets of the township and its people.

The community is required to supply in-kind support, and volunteers may be required to help with children’s activities.  Council fund food, any shade required for the day, and children’s events.

A donation of $500 is made to the community group hosting the day.
