PYRENEES Shire Council regrets to inform you that Councillor Michael O’Connor has passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, May 15.

Pyrenees Shire Council Mayor David Clark said: “We’re shocked and deeply saddened by the news today that Cr Michael O’Connor passed away late last night.”

“On behalf of all Pyrenees Shire councillors and staff, I would like to extend our heartfelt condolences to Michael’s wife Judy and their children Damien, Rachael, Emma, Liam and grandson Myles,” Cr Clark said.

“Michael attended the Ordinary Council Meeting last night, shared a meal with officers and his Councillor colleagues, and collapsed soon after he returned home.

“Michael has been a valued Councillor with Pyrenees Shire Council since 2008, Mayor for three terms, and an active member of the Waterloo and Beaufort community.”

Cr O’Connor moved to the Pyrenees Shire in January 2000 and lived at Waterloo, where he ran a small farm. He was actively involved in the CFA, Beaufort Secondary College and, up until recently, on the Board of Management of Beaufort and Skipton Health Services. Elected to Council in 2008 representing the Beaufort Ward, Cr O’Connor served as a Director of the former Highlands Regional Waste Management Association and was a Council delegate for the Grampians Central West Waste and Recovery Group.

Cr O’Connor was re-elected to Council in October 2012 and 2016.  He served as Mayor in 2010/11, 2012/13 and 2015/16.

We acknowledge the people past and present of the Wadawurrung, Dja Dja Wurrung, and Djab Wurrung tribes, whose land forms the Pyrenees Shire. We pay our respect to the customs, traditions and stewardship of the land by the elders and people of these tribes.
