Proposed Naming/Renaming of Roads

The Western Highway Duplication project, west of Beaufort, has created two new access roads and required the retainment of a section of the old highway to provide access to McKinnon Lane, Unnamed Road, Grampians View Road, Centre Road and various properties.

Council at its Ordinary meeting held on 18 April 2017 resolved to name new roads west of Beaufort using commemorative naming.  The following proposed road name changes are advertised for public comment:

Proposed Road: Driver Lane

Previous Name: Un-Named Access Road

Location: Access road commences at the old Western Highway intersection and terminates at McKinnon Lane, west of Beaufort.

Distance: 450 metres

Proposed Road: Caulfield Lane

Previous Name: Un-Named Access Road

Location: Access road on the north side of the Western Freeway, heads west from Martins Lane, west of Beaufort.

Distance: 450 metres

Proposed Road: Box Cutting Rise

Previous Name: Western Highway

Location: This section of the old Western Highway commences at the Western Freeway intersection and terminates west of Centre Road, west of Beaufort.

Distance: 2000 metres

Council invites residents to forward a submission for the naming/re-naming of these roads under Section 223, Local Government Act 1989. Plans highlighting the affected roads can be inspected at the Beaufort Office, Lawrence Street, Beaufort.

Submissions will be received until Monday 5th June 2017, after which Council will consider all submissions and resolve names accordingly.

The Office of Geographic Names has requested that as part of the gazetting of commemorative road names, proposed above, that Council obtains consent from the descendants of the historic families.

As part of the naming process, Council is seeking to contact descendants of:

J. Driver: former land holder near McKinnon Lane, west of Beaufort circa 1881

P. Caulfield: former land holder near Martins Lane, west of Beaufort circa 1894

J. Caulfield: former land holder near Martins Lane, west of Beaufort circa 1906

Council invites descendants of these residents to contact Council to discuss the proposed use of their family name for commemorative road naming.
