The Old Beaufort Primary School 60 Committee has presented Council with a Social Enterprise Plan with a vision for the former school site to be a multi-use community precinct.
Pyrenees Shire Council is interested in ensuring the best possible outcome for the former school site, and will take some further time to consider the proposal.
The former Beaufort Primary School site contains open space, buildings subject to a Heritage Overlay, other buildings and former sporting courts.
A portion of the site containing a section of Hill Street has been excised and will be declared a road.
Council has been working with the State Government and the community committee to consider the sustainable options for various parts of the site going forward.
Council resolved at its meeting Tuesday night to confirm its intention to have control of the land containing the underground drainage assets located near the former creek line. Control of this land would also allow for a north-south access connecting the adjoining open space areas.
Council will seek to purchase for community use the existing vacant land portion of the site including the old school oval which has limited development potential due to it being in a floodway overlay.
Council has also resolved to support the Old Beaufort Primary School 60 committee to do further work on the social enterprise plan to strengthen the long term sustainability for the proposed project before Council considers it further.
Mayor Tanya Kehoe said Council had resolved to determine its position on the site at the March 2020 meeting.
“The issue of the former Beaufort Primary School site is complex, and Council wants to ensure the asset is put to a use that is financially sustainable,” Cr Kehoe said.
“Council will continue to be involved in the process involving the former school site and we will determine a final position early next year,” she said.
