Pool and Spa safety barrier requirements

All Victorian pools and spas, including portable and inflatable pools, with a water depth of more than 300mm, must have safety barriers installed around them. Such safety barriers are required to comply with Australian Standards and must be constructed and installed by a registered domestic builder or owner builder and must have self-latching gates. The construction and installation of pools, spas and safety barriers are subject to requirements under the Building Regulations 2018 and require a building permit.

In light of recent legislative changes, Pyrenees Shire Council is now required to identify, register and inspect all pools and spas within the municipality to assess safety barrier compliance.

Over the coming months, Officers will be in contact with pool owners to make inspection arrangements.

Should you wish to obtain further information on safety barrier obligations, please contact Council on 5349 1100 or visit the Victorian Building Authorities website at http://www.vba.vic.gov.au/consumers/swimming-pools
