At a Special Council Meeting in March this year, Council approved a decision to seek to purchase 2.4 hectares of land at 30 Burke Street in Beaufort. With the land on the market at the time, Council took the opportunity to put in an offer, giving a unique opportunity for development for more housing in the Shire.

Council understands there is a lack of housing availability and a growing population in the Pyrenees, and wanted to help secure future housing opportunities for the Shire. The land at 30 Burke Street is zoned General Residential 1 and suitable for development, however Council has yet to decide on the form of development and Council’s role.

The 2022-23 budget includes provision for a loan to be taken up for the land purchase, and the area which could potentially provide around 20-25 standard housing lots. Council is concerned about the lack of available housing across the Shire and has been investigating opportunities in other towns also. With this opportunity in Beaufort, and following the completion of the Correa Park Estate, it is the right time for Council to work towards filling a housing gap for the Pyrenees community.
