Western Highway Ballarat to Buangor

Published on 08 July 2021

From Regional Roads Victoria:

Major safety upgrades to prevent run off road and head on crashes along the Western Highway between Ballarat and Buangor are nearing completion.

As of early June, 92 per cent of the works to install flexible safety barriers and guard rails on the highway between Ballarat and Beaufort have been completed.

So far, 63km of posts have been installed, hung and tensioned, while 39km of flexible safety wire rope and 13km of guard rail has been completed.

Along the Beaufort to Buangor section of the highway, 60 per cent (49.1km) of the works have been completed, including 36km of flexible safety barrier posts and 13.2km of guard rails installed.

Contractors are currently installing centre barriers along the east-bound lane of the Western Highway, between Dowling Road and Carpenter Road.

Motorists can expect delays and reduced speed limits along this stretch of the Western Highway while works are underway.

All works on this project are expected to be completed by mid-2021, weather permitting.

What this means for you

Crews will be on site 6am to 7pm Monday to Friday and 7am to 5pm on weekends, weather permitting.

During this time drivers will experience some of the below disruptions:

  • reduced speeds of 40km/h through the work site during construction hours, to protect both workers and drivers
  • one lane of traffic will be closed and traffic management will be in place during this time to guide you through the work site
  • at times, there may be multiple sites along the highway with lane closures

Crews will aim to minimise delays where possible and access to properties from the Western Highway will be kept open.

If you’re travelling through the area, keep an eye out for changed traffic conditions, plan ahead and allow for extra travel time.

We thank you for your patience while we complete these important safety improvements.
