In February 2015 a storm blew through Avoca that left the old picnic shelter on High St, Avoca, irreparably damaged. It was judged to unsafe by engineers and was demolished. This project is the replacement for that shelter.
The design of the picnic shelter draws inspiration from its rich historical surroundings and consists of a lightweight contemporary structure that complements the streetscape and provides a shaded area for both locals and visitors to sit and enjoy. The open form and high skillion roof allows unimpeded views along High Street towards the Avoca Soldiers’ Memorial to the north.
The design also reflects the distinctly recognisable productive and rural aesthetic, characteristic of the Avoca township.
