Pyrenees Shire Council and RMIT partner on road trial

Pyrenees Shire Council is partnering with RMIT University on an innovative road pavement stabilisation trial on Toppers Lane, Beaufort, with the aim of improving the performance, durability and cost-effectiveness of regional roads.
The trial involves the reconstruction of an 800-metre section of Toppers Lane, approximately 500 metres east of Eurambeen-Streatham Road, using a range of road pavement recycling and stabilisation techniques.
As part of the project, the road section has been divided into four consecutive 200-metre sections, with each section incorporating different stabilisation materials and mixing ratios. The trial will assess how each treatment performs under local traffic and weather conditions over time.
Mayor Cr Damian Ferrari said the project demonstrates Council's commitment to innovation and evidence-based infrastructure investment.
"Maintaining our 2000-kilometre local road network is one of Council's most significant responsibilities, and projects like this help us identify smarter and more sustainable ways of delivering that work," Cr Ferrari said.
"By partnering with RMIT University, we have the opportunity to test different approaches in real-world conditions and gather valuable data that can inform future road construction and maintenance projects across our municipality."
The findings are expected to help identify the most resilient and cost-effective pavement stabilisation methods for regional road networks, potentially delivering longer-lasting roads and better value for ratepayers.
The trial’s construction is currently taking place, with traffic management measures including road closures, single-lane access and reduced speed limits in place during the works.
Council thanks road users and nearby residents for their patience and cooperation while the trial is being undertaken.
