Overview

Sharing its name with the famous French mountain range, the Pyrenees region of western Victoria is only a stone’s throw from Melbourne yet a world away from your hectic life. Our gorgeous rural region is just 30 minutes west of Ballarat, and just under two hours from Melbourne.

You can get here via the Western Highway, Sunraysia Highway or Pyrenees Highway. We are just 30 minutes from larger cities such as Ballarat, Ararat and Maryborough and can offer you and your family all that you need to make a successful tree change.

Our townships are located at the foothills of the Pyrenees State Forest and Mt Cole State Park surrounded by picturesque mountains and grazing country. It is a region full of tranquil and inspiring natural attractions, including the Mount Buangor National Park, Pyrenees State Forest, Mount Cole State Park and St Arnaud National Park.

The region’s magnificent natural environment attracts both adventurers and those in need of wide open spaces and peace and tranquillity. There are many ways to engage with the natural environment from hiking, 4WDriving, mountain biking, or simply admiring the views from a perfectly located lookout, the options are limitless. The region’s relaxed and safe lifestyle are a major drawcard for young families, retirees on anyone in between.

Beaufort

Beaufort is the largest town in the Council with a population of 1500. Beaufort is located on the Western Highway and has direct rail linkages to Melbourne and Ballarat.  The township of Beaufort is dotted with small cafés, craft shops and antique shops.
Beaufort Lake provides the opportunity for many water activities from fishing, boating, skiing and swimming. Around its shores and in the neighbouring reserve you’ll find a network of walking tracks and exercise equipment.

Avoca

The township of Avoca is located at the crossroads of the Sunraysia and Pyrenees Highway and has a population of 1200. Avoca is perfectly positioned surrounded by wineries, rolling hills, spectacular vistas, and clean air.  The picturesque Avoca River runs through the centre of town and lends itself to events being held along its banks through the year.  
The wide main street is a delight to explore with hotels, cafés, gift shops, galleries and collectables all housed in historic buildings dating back to the 1850s.

Townships in the Pyrenees

Other population centres include the rural towns of Waubra, Moonambel, Landsborough, Snake Valley, Lexton, and Amphitheatre.  Each of these towns has a variety of services and commercial opportunities.

Amphitheatre was originally located further south of its current location, in the natural Amphitheatre that exists which is where the town got its name.

The picturesque town of Landsborough is nestled at the foothills of the Pyrenees Ranges and was established in 1862 during the gold rush era. Evidence of its gold mining history can be seen in and around the town today along with amazing art, cycling tracks, 4WD tracks, bush walking, bird watching and picnicking.

The beautiful valley and surrounds of Moonambel provide the perfect spot to explore our natural environment. There are over 15 wineries within a 10km radius for you to experience.It is home to a strong arts and events community, hosting Party in the Pyrenees Fireworks display every two years.

Snake Valley came into existence as a goldrush settlement. As it became a more established community, its buildings also became more permanent in nature. One such building is the simple Norman-style Snake Valley Methodist Church, constructed in 1908-09 to replace the existing church.

Waubra was known as ‘Springs’ until 1888. Waubra has a primary school, a strong football/netball club and is a strong farming community. It is home to the Waubra Windfarm.

Lexton sits on the Sunraysia Highway and is a vibrant farming community. Lexton is home to historic buildings.

The majority of our towns have local sporting activities all year round with a multitude of sports and leisure activities on offer. Join a local football or netball club, golf, bowls, cricket, tennis or even a petanque club! There is sure to be a community group or sporting club ready to welcome you.
