Pyrenees Shire Council does not permit the collection of firewood on roadsides.
Collecting firewood from Council-managed roadsides poses significant safety risks, both to those gathering wood and to passing road users. Many road verges are narrow, with limited visibility, and safe access cannot be guaranteed without professional traffic management.
Roadside vegetation also provides vital habitat for native plants and animals, which rely on hollows and fallen timber for shelter and homes.
From time-to-time, Council may have excess wood or mulch as a result of works undertaken to maintain road safety. On these occasions we will aim to provide a safe location on public land where firewood can be collected. These opportunities will be advertised on Council's website and in other media channels.
The Victorian Government permits limited collection of firewood for personal use from designated collection areas in State forests during autumn and spring. For current collection areas, visit the Forest Fire Management Victoria website or collect a map from your nearest DEECA office.
