Recycling

Four bins lined up at the front of a building with lids of yellow, purple, red and green.

Kerbside recycling collection

Landfill bins are collected weekly in town areas and fortnightly in rural areas. Recycling bins are collected fortnightly in both town and rural areas. Rural recycling bins are collected on the alternate weeks to landfill collection. Both your landfill and your recycling bins will be collected on the same day of the week.

Find out what day your bins are collected

Please make sure;

  • you rinse all items,
  • cans and plastic containers are crushed,
  • you remove corks and lids, and
  • cardboard boxes are folded flat or torn into smaller more manageable pieces before placing them into your recycling bin.

All items should be placed into the bin loose.

You can also take your recycling to the transfer stations within the municipality.

Garden organics

Council has a garden organics collection service within the townships of Avoca and Beaufort.

  • A 240-litre garden organics bin with a lime-green lid is provided to households within the serviced areas.
  • The garden organics bin service has improved the ability for residents of Avoca and Beaufort to remove green waste from their property.

The garden organics collected by Council is processed and repurposed as capping for old tip sites and use around existing transfer stations with weed reduction, reducing greenhouse gas liability, and reducing contamination of recyclables. Approximately 900 cubic metres of garden organics is collected annually.

What items can be placed in my garden organics bin?

Garden organics
Lawn Clippings
Leaves and prunings

Flowers and weeds

Please do not overfill your garden organics bin as the waste trucks cannot lift more than a maximum of 70kg. If you overfill your bin or put too much material in, for example wet grass, it's very easy for the bin to weigh more than 70kg.

Glass recycling

Glass can no longer go in your yellow lid recycle bin.
To recycle your glass, you will need to place it in your purple lid bin.
It is requested that labels are removed from all glass bottles and jars before placing them in glass recycling bins.

Soft plastic recycling

Residents of Pyrenees Shire can now recycle their soft plastics through the new Soft Plastic Program.
Simply place all accepted soft plastic waste into the approved orange recycling bags. Once the bag is full, tie it securely and put it in your recycling bin for collection.

Where can I get the approved orange bags?

Households can register for the program from 2 February, by phoning 1300 797 363 or in person at Council’s Beaufort Office to get a free pack of 20 bags.

When can we start placing the orange bags in our recycling bin?

The approved orange bags can be placed into recycling bins from 2 March 2026.

Under the scheme, households can put their soft plastics into special orange bags to put into kerbside recycling bins to be made into new Australian products.
This free and optional service aims to help the community recycle more products and reduce waste to landfill.
