The community-led Carranballac Recreation Reserve rebuild has taken an important step forward, with a $1.72 million insurance payout now formally confirmed to support the project.
In line with a Council resolution passed on 15 June, the rebuild will be driven by the local community, with Council playing a supporting role alongside key stakeholders.
The reserve’s buildings were destroyed in the January 9 Streatham Yalla-Y-Poora fire.
The insurance funds delay was due to additional inclusions that required rescoping as part of the claim process. The DEECA-appointed Committee of Management also needed to be re-established to ensure clear governance arrangements and formally appointed site land managers were in place.
Mayor Cr Damian Ferrari said the insurance funds release marks a significant milestone for the community.
"This funding provides the foundation for the Carranballac community to move forward with rebuilding a much-loved local facility," Cr Ferrari said.
"We know the journey to this point has taken longer than anyone would have liked, but it was important that all governance arrangements were properly established and that the insurance claim accurately reflected the scope of works required.
"Council remains committed to working closely with the Community Working Group, the Committee of Management and DEECA to support a successful, community-led rebuild that will benefit local residents for years to come."
