H5 Bird Flu (H5N1 avian influenza)

Bird flu is a type of virus that mainly affects birds. It can also affect other animals and, on rare occasions, humans.

While H5N1 avian influenza (bird flu) has recently been detected in migratory seabirds in Western Australia, South Australia and New South Wales, there have currently been no detections in Victoria.

If you see sick or dead birds:

  • AVOID contact with sick or dead wild birds or wildlife and their environment
  • RECORD what you see
  • REPORT wildlife sickness or deaths to DEECA using the online form or call the Emergency Animal Disease Hotline on 1800 675 888.

Report clusters of 5 or more sick or dead wild birds of any species, anywhere in Victoria.
