Beaufort’s 151-year-old weighbridge building is preparing for its journey to the township’s railway precinct.

In 2021, Pyrenees Shire Council asked the community for suggestions for a new weighbridge building location, with the railway precinct being nominated.

The historic building has seen several homes. In 1903 the weighbridge building became a storage shed for the Wotherspoon store, before being used as a Beaufort Cemetery shelter and then a Main Lead tool shed. In 2005, the building was donated back to the people of Beaufort after which it was restored and placed at a Havelock Street site in 2008.

The building has been located at Council’s depot since 2021 after it was moved from its Havelock Street site due to future development of the nearby Beaufort and Skipton Health Service.

Pyrenees Shire Council Mayor Tanya Kehoe said she was looking forward to seeing the weighbridge in its new home at the railway precinct in Pratt St.

“Bringing this weighbridge back to the centre of Beaufort is more than just restoring an old building, it’s about reconnecting with our history, celebrating our heritage and honouring the spirit of our community,” Cr Kehoe said.

“I am looking forward to seeing the former weighbridge building standing proudly in the railway precinct, restored to its former glory.”

An existing building located at the same location was demolished on Monday and a new slab prepared. The historic building is expected to be relocated in the coming weeks. Once relocated, final restoration and repairs will be made to the building.
