Pyrenees Shire Council CEO Jim Nolan has announced his resignation from the position after more than 11 years in the role.

Mr Nolan will retire after a 37-year career in local government, including stints at Glenelg, Southern Grampians and Northern Grampians Shires.

“It has been a privilege to be CEO of Pyrenees Shire Council since December 2014, but it is time to focus on the next chapter of my life and I’m looking forward to pursuing other interests, including travel and spending time with family,” Mr Nolan said.

Pyrenees Shire Mayor Damian Ferrari said Mr Nolan had established himself as a highly respected leader in the local government sector.

“Mr Nolan has worked closely with various Councils to position Pyrenees Shire as a responsible municipality that punches above its weight, which is a credit to Jim, the organisation and the quality of the staff,” Cr Ferrari said.

“Mr Nolan’s attention to financial management has seen Council become debt-free before deciding to invest in land development and residential housing, including the Burke Street Housing Project which will provide increased housing opportunities for Beaufort.”

Mr Nolan said some of his achievements included steering Council through challenging periods such as the COVID pandemic and natural disasters, including the 2016 and 2022 floods and the 2024 and 2026 bushfires.

He said he is particularly proud of the delivery of significant capital works including numerous road and bridge construction projects and the building of community assets such as the Lexton Community Hub.

“Much of this I credit to the capability and professionalism of the many staff I have worked with over the years who have continued to build Pyrenees Shire Council into the strong organisation it is today.

“I’ve enjoyed my time in local government working in rural communities and the opportunity to make a difference in those communities through the work councils do at a local level.

“I would like to thank the Councillors for their confidence in appointing me to the role and their support over the time.

“There are many challenges currently facing Pyrenees Shire Council and into the future, but I leave knowing that Council in a sound financial position and with a very capable workforce.

“Pyrenees Shire provides a fantastic opportunity for people to build a wonderful life in a beautiful part of the world to live and work. I will miss the Shire, the staff and the communities I have spent my last 11 ½ years serving and wish the Council and incoming CEO all the best for the future.”

Cr Ferrari said Mr Nolan will finish on Friday 10 July, with an interim CEO to be appointed soon.

“Council will need to engage an interim CEO and are looking at our options. We will then consider the next steps in recruiting a new CEO,” Cr Ferrari said.
