Pyrenees Shire Council will continue to advocate for a roundabout at Stoneleigh’s Eurambeen-Streatham Road and Mt William Road intersection, instead of a recently funded staggered T-intersection.

The intersection was the site of a triple fatality on 11 November 2025 and was already the subject of a Council Black Spot Funding Program application to improve safety. It is jointly managed by Pyrenees Shire Council and Ararat Rural City Council under a boundary road agreement.

Council will push for an increase in the $856,000 Commonwealth Government for a T-intersection to $3 million for a roundabout instead.

Pyrenees Shire Mayor Damian Ferrari said, while he welcomed the funding provided in April, a roundabout was still Council’s preferred option for several reasons including:

  • A roundabout has a crash reduction factor of double that for a staggered T-intersection
  • Improved safety outcomes for larger vehicles due to the slower speed of a roundabout
  • Increasing risks with higher traffic and truck volumes expected over the next 15-25 years
  • Inefficient funding use to provide a staggered T-intersection when a roundabout will ultimately be required
  • Eurambeen-Streatham Road is a major strategic truck route around Ballarat onto the Western Highway
  • Community feedback received after the fatality

“The safety of road users is a high priority for Council, and we believe a roundabout at this intersection will greatly assist in preventing future serious incidents at this site,” Cr Ferrari said.

“Council will also work with the community, which is very concerned about this intersection, to keep them up to date with the latest developments and information relating to this site.”
