Australia Day 2024 celebrations in Pyrenees Shire
Published on 17 January 2024
Pyrenees Shire residents are invited to gather at the Avoca Recreation Reserve on Friday 26 January to mark Australia Day.
Australia Day is a chance to reflect, respect and celebrate together as a community.
The day will include a ceremony to welcome new citizens, as well as acknowledging the contributions of our residents with the annual Australia Day Awards.
Australia Day Ambassador Professor Paul Komesaroff AM will give the annual Australia Day address.
Professor Komesaroff is a physician, medical researcher and philosopher at Monash University in Melbourne, where he is a professor of medicine.
Pyrenees Shire Mayor, Cr Robert Vance, said Australia Day is an opportunity to look back at the past year and come together to celebrate what we have as a nation and a community.
“The start of the year is always a good time to stop and reflect on the last year. Australia Day is a day where we can reflect on the achievements of last year and to look to the year ahead,” Cr Vance said.
Council presents three awards on Australia day: Young Citizen of the Year, Citizen of the Year and Event of the Year.
“Once again we’ve had many amazing nominations for our Australia Day awards,” said Cr Vance. “It’s a privilege to be part of an event that recognizes incredible efforts of our residents and community groups. This kind of community spirit is what makes the Pyrenees such a great place to live.”
The event will start with morning tea at 10am. The official celebrations, including the Australia Day Awards and citizenship ceremony, begin at 11 am, followed by a BBQ lunch.
Free activities and displays for whole family include Jamie & Kim’s mobile zoo, airbrush tattooing, Walk the Walls Parkour, face painting and Furals wood workshop.
This event is proudly hosted by the Avoca CWA and Pyrenees Shire Council, with support from the National Australia Day Council.
