Avoca Recreation Reserve draft flood study released
Published on 26 June 2025
Pyrenees Shire Council, at its June meeting, considered a report regarding the Avoca Recreation Reserve’s Flood Mitigation Investigation.
Council resolved to approve the release of the draft final report and provide a community consultation session to report the findings.
The report includes a full flood assessment and potential options to protect the recreation reserve and surrounding properties from future floods.
Since 2010, the Avoca Recreation Reserve has been flooded four times, with flooding in 2022 leading to prolonged closure of the football and netball clubrooms and the Avoca Men’s Shed, impacting heavily on the local community.
The 2022 event also cost $1.4 million in damages.
Pyrenees Shire Mayor Tanya Kehoe said Avoca, and particularly the Avoca Recreation Reserve and Men’s Shed, had been hard hit by flooding and especially the 2022 event.
“This report will provide the community with some tangible recommendations as to how best to mitigate future flood events,’’ Cr Kehoe said.
“This will provide some surety to the Avoca community that these valuable local assets will be better protected in the future, especially in light of the whole community ramifications these floods have had on the township.”
An Avoca Recreation Reserve Flood Mitigation Investigation community information session will be held on Wednesday 2 July at the recreation reserve’s Social Room between 4 and 6pm.
Hosted by Water Technology’s principal engineer Ben Hughes and project engineer Jorja Strack, the session will provide community members with an opportunity to view the Draft Flood Mitigation and Cost Benefit Analysis report and hear two presentations by Water Technology consultants.
