Pyrenees Shire Council will invest in critical upgrade works at the Beaufort Pool to enable the facility to reopen for the 2026/27 summer season.

The funding will support floor repairs, pool liner replacement, perimeter tiling repairs and structural crack remediation.

While the works will allow the pool to continue operating, construction timelines may delay the start of its 2026/27 season.

Pyrenees Shire Mayor Damian Ferrari said the decision balanced the importance of maintaining a valued community asset with the financial realities facing regional councils.

“Council recognises the important role local pools play in supporting community wellbeing, recreation and social connection,” Cr Ferrari said.

“However, in an ever-tightening financial climate, pools present a common challenge among regional councils due to their significant maintenance requirements and operating costs.

“This decision provides a practical short-term pathway to maintain service continuity, address the highest-priority pool and compliance risks, and allow Council to make longer-term decisions through an upcoming Community Sport Recreation and Active Participation Strategy.”

The decision follows detailed investigations into the condition of all three swimming pools across the municipality to identify immediate works required for the 2026/27 season and inform future planning.

The assessment found the Beaufort Pool was in very poor structural condition, with extensive cracking, deterioration, thin sections of floor slab and substantially reduced concrete strength.

The Avoca Pool was found to be in fair to good condition, requiring only minor repairs ahead of the coming season, while the Landsborough Pool also requires minor targeted maintenance work.

“The condition assessments have provided Council with a much clearer understanding of the challenges and investment required across our pool network,” Cr Ferrari said.

Council also resolved to extend its existing contract with Belgravia Leisure for the management of Council's swimming pools for a further 12 months.
