Council seeks James Scullin Memorial Park management

Pyrenees Shire Council will formally seek to become the land manager of Trawalla’s James Scullin Memorial Park.
The park commemorates Australia’s ninth Prime Minister James Scullin, who was born in Trawalla on 18 September 1876 and attended Trawalla Primary School.
The Beaufort Historical Society has proposed development of the James Scullin Memorial Park, which is currently Crown Land and largely undeveloped apart from an entrance gate and plaque commemorating Scullin, picnic tables and informal, grass recreation areas.
While Council has been maintaining the park for several years, site management has never been formally transferred from the Victorian Government.
At its Monday night meeting, Council voted to become the park’s land manager and to write to the Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action (DECCA) to request a formal appointment. Council will also advocate for DECCA funding to help maintain the reserve.
Council will also work with the Beaufort Historical Society to support the proposed Scullin memorial project and continue to maintain the park’s grounds.
Pyrenees Shire Council Mayor Tanya Kehoe said the park was a strong link to a part of Australia’s political history.
“James Scullin grew up in Trawalla and deserves some prominent recognition for his service to his country and for leading Australia through the early stages of the Great Depression,” Cr Kehoe said.
