Flood study to be conducted in Lexton
Published on 12 July 2023
The flood events in October and November 2022 across the Pyrenees Shire were devastating to residents and businesses.
These events caused millions of dollars’ worth of damage, while also impacting major events and visitation to the area.
The township of Lexton was significantly impacted, with all roads in and out of the town blocked by floodwater.
The Victorian Government has provided funding of $200,000 to support the development of the Lexton Flood Management Plan.
This project will be managed by Council and have technical support from North Central Catchment Management Authority. It will include a full flood study and assessment of mitigation options for the township of Lexton.
The information from this project will increase the flood resilience of the Lexton community by improving and building on the available flood knowledge.
The findings from the study and assessment will be used for land use and development planning, emergency management planning, and response and community education. The project will consult with the local community bringing together that local knowledge and assessing possible mitigation options.
The information from the project, including flood mapping produced by the study will be made freely available to the public and will also be used to inform VICSES Floodsafe programs.
This project will help Council and the Lexton community respond and recover better to potential future floods in the area.
