Pyrenees Shire Council is inviting all residents—pet owners and non-pet owners alike—to provide feedback on its Draft Domestic Animal Management Plan (DAMP) 2026–2029.

The plan guides how Council manages dogs, cats and other animals across the Shire, and community input will help shape a safe, responsible animal-friendly future.

The DAMP is also part of Council’s responsibility under the Domestic Animals Act 1994 (VIC), which mandates that councils plan for responsible pet ownership, animal welfare, and community safety every four years.

The DAMP outlines Council’s approach to:

  • Promoting responsible pet ownership
  • Managing stray and nuisance animals
  • Addressing animal overpopulation
  • Delivering education and community programs
  • Supporting animal welfare and protecting the environment

Mayor Cr Damian Ferrari said community feedback is a vital part of ensuring the plan reflects local needs and expectations.

“Our pets are an important part of life in Pyrenees Shire, and how we manage them has a real impact on community safety, wellbeing and our environment,” Cr Ferrari said.

“We’re encouraging everyone—whether you own a pet or not—to take a few minutes to review the draft plan and let us know what matters most to you.”

Drop-in sessions to chat to Council staff will be held at the Avoca Information Centre on 4 and 18 June, and the Beaufort Community Resource Centre on 11 and 25 June.

Council staff will also be at the Avoca Market on 28 June and the Beaufort Market on 17 July.

The draft plan is open for public consultation on Council’s website at pyrenees.vic.gov.au from 9am, Monday 1 June until 5pm, Tuesday 21 July 2026.

The final Domestic Animal Management Plan 2026–2029 will be presented to Council for adoption in September 2026.
