As bushfire season rapidly approaches, it’s time for the whole community to become fire wise.

A Community Fire Wise Experience will be held at the Landsborough Hall on Saturday 11 October between 1pm and 4pm with vegetation management expert Owen Gooding.

Mr Gooding has worked with the CFA for over 18 years. He helps plan how land is used, how to do safe burning, and how to protect nature and important cultural places while keeping areas safe from bushfires. He also helped investigate why so many homes were lost in the 2009 Victorian bushfires.

Mr Gooding will explain:

• Why homes are lost in bushfires

• How plants and trees can increase or reduce fire risk

• Which plants burn easily and why

• Ways to use plants and soil care to lower fire intensity and help protect property

This session is part of the Safer Together Bushfire Resilience Program run by Pyrenees Shire Council and funded by the Victorian Government.

Pyrenees Shire Mayor Tanya Kehoe urged residents to join the session.

“This will be an engaging and informative session focused on community bushfire preparedness and the role of vegetation in fire risk and resilience,” Cr Kehoe said.

Friends and neighbours are welcome to come along, and attendees are asked to bring a couple of samples from their garden. The session includes afternoon tea and a walk around town.

It will be preceded by CFA Landsborough’s Get Fire Ready Open Day at the Landsborough Resource Centre on Saturday 11 October between 10.30am and 1pm.

Residents can meet their local CFA members and ask questions about fire season preparation. There will also be a free barbecue and children’s activities.

As part of the Safer Together Bushfire Resilience Program, Community Bushfire Meetings will also be held at:

• Lexton Hall on 22 October between 6.30pm-9pm with a free barbecue dinner provided by the Lexton CFA from 6.30pm

• Snake Valley Hall on 5 November between 7pm-9pm with supper provided by Council.

Council is partnering with CFA District 16, which is a CFA western Victoria district, to host the meetings featuring a free one-hour fire safety essentials session including:

• How to know if there is a fire nearby

• What to expect during a bushfire or grassfire

• Your bushfire or grassfire risk

• The importance of having a plan

• Basic survival tips if your fire plan fails
