Pyrenees Shire Council has adopted the Lexton Flood Management Plan which documents the flood impacts on the township, and tests impact reduction options.

At its Monday meeting, Council supported further clearing in Lexton’s Burnbank Creek of non-native vegetation and obstructions.

Lexton’s most recent significant flood in October 2022 caused significant impacts to residents, millions of dollars in damage and isolated the township.

Following this event, initial works were undertaken to clear some debris and rubbish from the stream bed, and a pedestrian bridge was removed that had created a restriction to the flow.

Council will also seek appropriate permissions to remove some native vegetation regrowth from the stream.

Council will seek authorisation to prepare a Planning Scheme Amendment to incorporate the Lexton Flood Management Plan into the Pyrenees Planning Scheme, which will be put out for public exhibition before returning to Council for consideration.

Mayor Tanya Kehoe said a great deal of work had gone into the plan to ensure flooding severity in Lexton could be minimised through mitigation works.

“On behalf of Council, I would like to thank the community for guiding us in the creation of this plan through contributing feedback and personal observations of historical flood events,” Cr Kehoe said.
