Pyrenees Shire Council Mayor Damian Ferrari has urged the community to stand together in a strong show of support for those affected by last week’s devastating Streatham bushfire.

“This fire has devastated a large part of our Shire, and losses have been significant, including homes, farm sheds, machinery, stock, fencing and fodder losses,” Cr Ferrari said.

“Along with our neighbouring Councils at Ararat and Corangamite, we are working hard to support our affected residents to get the help they need as quickly as possible.

“Among the many urgent and most basic needs are access to food and accommodation, drinking water, feed and water for stock and access to support payments.

“The immediate efforts of the Carranballac and Stoneleigh communities to support each other have been inspirational.

“A team of Council staff and agencies working from the Skipton Recovery Hub are there to support those impacted.

“Our team is also reaching out directly to people to offer any assistance we can.”

Cr Ferrari also paid tribute to the tireless efforts of CFA volunteers who worked to contain the Streatham blaze.

“Your hard work, courage and dedication in protecting our community does not go unnoticed. I sincerely thank all CFA volunteers for their service and commitment to keeping our residents safe.”

Cr Ferrari encouraged residents to visit Council’s bushfire support services webpage at www.pyrenees.vic.gov.au, which brings together a wide range of financial, agricultural, mental health, safety and recovery information.

“As we move into the recovery phase, Council wants to provide a one-stop shop where people can easily access the information and support they need, now and into the future,” he said.

“Whether it’s guidance on making drinking water safe, accessing local mental health support, or repairing homes and property after a bushfire, the information and support is there at people’s fingertips.”

Cr Ferrari said Council is committed to walking alongside the community every step of the way as people begin to rebuild their homes, properties and livelihoods.

“Our immediate focus is on ensuring residents have access to the right support and information, but our long-term commitment is to help our community recover, rebuild and emerge stronger.

“Pyrenees Shire has faced challenges before, and time and again we have shown that when we stand together, we are stronger.”
