2023-24 waste charges for Pyrenees Shire residents
Published on 23 June 2023
Council adopted the 2023-24 Budget at its Ordinary Meeting on 23 June in Beaufort.
This year, the waste charge for Pyrenees Shire residents will increase to $556. This waste charge includes the cost of collecting kerbside bins, bin supply, operating four transfer stations, processing of recyclables and disposal of waste, public litter management, and the Victorian Government’s waste levy.
“We know that residents don’t like increases to their rates, but this is one thing we need to do to meet the costs of running a waste service for the Shire,” Pyrenees Shire Council Mayor Cr Ron Eason said.
The cost of providing waste services has risen for all Victorian councils following rising service costs and yearly increases to the Victorian Government’s waste levy.
This is the first waste charge increase since 2020-21 financial year and the service has now been extended across the Shire.
To help with keeping costs low, transfer station opening hours will change with the Avoca and Beaufort stations opening just three days per week (compared with four previously) to save residents around $24,000 per year.
“The change in the transfer station hours is expected to have a minimal impact on our community while making sure we can keep the transfer stations running,” Cr Eason said.
Council expanded its waste collection service to cover all residents of the Shire in 2021. Glass collection has now been rolled-out in Beaufort and Avoca and transfer station drop off is free for all Pyrenees Shire residents.
Transfer stations around the Shire will still be open weekends, which are the most visited days.
