Safe Local Roads and Streets Program
- Project typeRoad safety improvements
- Project value$2 million
- Project scheduleDecember 2025 onwards
- Completion Date31 December 2026
Pyrenees Shire Council has received $2 million under the Victorian Government and TAC’s Safe Local Roads and Streets Program to deliver a range of road safety improvements across the municipality
Targeted speed limit reductions and reconfiguring Y-intersections
Speed limit reductions
Several roads now have new and updated speed limits, with others to be updated by March 2026, including:
• Vaughan Street, Simpson Street, Chute-Raglan Road (first 350m), & Codrington St, Raglan – new 60 km/h speed zone
• Eurambeen–Raglan Road (first 475m), Raglan – new 80 km/h speed zone
• Beaufort–Waubra Road (first 525m) & Waubra-Talbot Road (first 300m), Waubra – new 60 km/h speed zone
• Waubra–Talbot Road, Evansford – new 60 km/h speed zone within the township of Evansford
• Old Shirley Road, Beaufort – Extension of the 80km/hr speed zone toward Beaufort to the Western Hwy
• Trawalla Road (first 525m) & Langi Kal Kal Road (first 375m), Trawalla – new 60 km/h speed zone
• Amphitheatre Road & School Road, Amphitheatre – signage updates to 60km/h and 40km/hr speed signs
These new speed limits have been determined by assessing several factors, including the Victorian Government’s Speed Zoning Technical Guidelines, which recommend:
• reducing speed limits to 60–80 km/h on peri-urban roads and hamlets
• reducing speed limits to 50–60 km/h on local streets with higher levels of traffic movement
Council also considered resident feedback received through the Customer Action Request System (CARS), where concerns about speeding are frequently raised.
Another key consideration was the Victoria Government’s Safe System philosophy, particularly the Safer Speeds pillar, which focuses on reducing the likelihood and severity of crashes.
Projected township growth, nearby schools and high-volume connecting roads were also assessed when determining the new limits.
Reconfiguring Y-intersections
Evansford’s Waubra-Talbot Road is undergoing a major safety upgrade, with four hazardous Y-intersections being reconfigured and some speed limits changed.
The Waubra-Talbot Road intersections being changed include:
- School Road
- Stud Farm Road
- Lexton-Evansford Road
- Clunes-Evansford Road
The intersections will be altered from Y-intersections to T-intersections to reduce accident risks caused by confusing layouts, limited sightlines, uncertainty over right-of-way and vehicles approaching from three directions at once.
There will also be speed zone changes from 80 or 70 km/h to 60 km/h following a review of the existing limits, in line with the Victorian Government’s Speed Zoning Technical Guidelines and community feedback.
The $260,000 project is funded by the TAC in partnership with the Victorian Government through the Safe Local Roads and Streets Program, which is delivering $2 million in road safety improvements across Pyrenees Shire.
The section of Waubra-Talbot Road incorporating the four intersections will also be reconstructed with $150,000 from the Australian Government’s Roads to Recovery Program.
Snake Valley road works
Works are beginning to install three speed humps near the Snake Valley Primary School and an altered township entrance on Snake Valley–Smythesdale Road.
Residents and road users are advised that temporary traffic disruptions will occur during construction. This will include traffic control and speed reductions in place.
The decision to introduce these measures has been informed by traffic count and speed data, TAC accident data, and alignment with the Victorian Road Safety Strategy.
