Strengthening and guardrail works have started on the McKinlay Street bridge in Landsborough.
The $160,000 project will be carried out by contractor On Track Civil Earthworks as part of Pyrenees Shire’s ongoing bridge program.
The works are expected to take about six weeks to complete, with a vehicle detour available via King Street and Forestry Road through the Landsborough Recreation Reserve.
Pedestrian traffic will be able to use the current structure, or a temporary pedestrian bridge will be installed if required.
The McKinlay Street bridge is one of Pyrenees Shire Council’s load limited bridges with these strengthening works removing the need for the load limit, allowing heavier traffic to use the infrastructure.
The works have been funded by $110,000 from the Australian Government’s Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program and $50,000 from Council.
Pyrenees Shire Council CEO Jim Nolan said the bridge works would provide improved infrastructure for Landsborough.
“This bridge is an important pedestrian route to the Landsborough Primary School and a vital thoroughfare for the estimated 150 vehicles which travel across it every day,” Mr Nolan said.
“Pyrenees Shire contains 150 bridges, of which 100 are over 50 years old. Some of these are load limited to ensure community safety so it’s vitally important we continue to strengthen them over time.”
