Pyrenees Shire Council is looking for feedback on two possible names for currently unnamed roads in Avoca.

The proposed names, Kathleen Street and Rose Mary Way, would commemorate the Walker sisters born in Avoca in the 1880s and who both served in the Australian Army Nursing Service during World War I. The sisters were posted to Convalescent Depot, Harefield Park, London with Rose Mary also serving in Lemnos and Egypt.

At its Monday meeting, Council voted to put the names Kathleen Street and Rose Mary Way out for public submissions.

Pyrenees Shire Mayor Cr Tanya Kehoe said a proposal to name the two roads after the Walker sisters would be a lovely way to remember their wartime service while linking them back to their birthplace.

“We will put these names out for public submissions and see what the community thinks,” Cr Kehoe said.

Geographic Names Victoria oversees the naming of roads and places in Victoria following naming rules based on national standards.

Appropriate naming of roads is essential to identify locations for managing emergencies and delivering goods and services, including mail.

Submissions will be received until Friday 29 August 2025, after which Council will consider all submissions and resolve names accordingly.

Further information and submissions can be made via our Engage with Us! page or via email to pyrenees@pyrenees.vic.gov.au or post, addressed to: Pyrenees Shire Council, 5 Lawrence Street, Beaufort 3373.  Please ensure you reference the correct naming proposal.
