Have your say on Avoca’s entrance sculpture

Voting will open on Wednesday for an exciting new entrance sculpture planned for Avoca.

The sculpture will provide a memorable welcome for visitors and celebrate Avoca’s position at the heart of the Pyrenees wine region.

Pyrenees Shire Council recently invited artists to submit concepts for the public artwork, which will be installed at the Pyrenees and Sunraysia highways intersection previously occupied by the wine barrels sculpture removed for safety reasons in 2023.

Several proposals were received from Pyrenees Shire artists and assessed against artistic merit, community relevance, durability, and how well they reflect Avoca’s identity and values.

A couple of these artwork concepts have been shortlisted, and community members are encouraged to vote for their preferred design at Engage with Us before voting closes on Wednesday 9 September.

Mayor Cr Damian Ferrari said the project would create a lasting feature for Avoca and give the community a say in how the town welcomes visitors.

“The shortlisted designs showcase the creativity and talent of local artists, while reflecting Avoca’s character, history and identity,” Cr Ferrari said.

“This is an opportunity for people to help choose a new landmark that will become part of Avoca’s streetscape and sense of place for years to come,” Cr Ferrari said.

The project is funded by the Victorian Government’s Department of Jobs, Skills, Industry and Regions through the Tiny Towns Fund.
