Waste and recycling survey

pexels-lara-jameson-9324360.jpg

Our 2025 Waste and Recycling Survey gives residents the chance to provide feedback on Council's current service and how we can improve on reducing waste to landfill.

These results will also help Council provide the best possible service in line with the Circular Economy (Waste Reduction and Recycling) Act 2021.

Please note before taking the survey, our waste and recycling service is funded by the waste and recycling charge on your rate notice. Changes to waste and recycling services will alter this charge.

Take the survey here.

Survey closes 26 September 2025

Helpful information

1. Food Organics and Garden Organics (FOGO)

By July 2027, we have to provide a four-bin kerb collection system, including landfill, recycling, glass and an extra food organics/garden organics (FOGO) bin.

(Note: If you are in Avoca or Beaufort, this will mean changing your existing green waste bin to a FOGO bin).

Food organics include:

  • Fruit
  • Vegetables
  • Food scraps
  • Bones
  • Meat
  • Dairy products
  • Grains
  • Breads
  • Pasta
  • Rice.

Garden organics includes:

  • Garden clippings
  • Dried leaves
  • Weed
  • Grass

FOGO can easily be commercially composted instead of going to landfill.

2 Four-bin kerbside collection system option

An option for a four-bin kerbside collection service is:

a) Landfill

  • 240-litre bins collected every three weeks (changed from weekly 120-litre bins in Avoca and Beaufort and fortnightly 240-litre bins in other areas)

b) Recycling

  • 240-litre bins collected fortnightly (no change to existing collections)

c) Glass

  • 120 litre bins collected every eight weeks (changed from every four weeks)

d) FOGO

240-litre bins collected fortnightly (new service which includes changing the four-weekly green waste collections in Avoca and Beaufort)

This four-bin kerbside system will reduce waste and recycling rates by an estimated $75.

This option has been developed from data provided by Council's kerbside collection trucks and kerbside bin audits.

This data shows

  • On average, around 30-40% of landfill bin are FOGO material
  • On average, landfill bins are only 65% full
  • Only 25% of glass bins are put out for collection on their collection days
  • On average, glass bins are below 30% full
  • The Container Deposit Scheme has greatly reduced glass containers in the glass bin
  • The average household has a contamination rate of 23% in its recycling bin

How else can we help?

Unsure of your kerbside collection day? You can find out your collection day by entering your address on Council's website here.

Contact Council on 1300 797 363 or email pyrenees@pyrenees.vic.gov.au for any of the following:

  • Lost your kerbside bin calendar or require a larger print? You can request a replacement calendar from Council.
  • Has our truck missed collecting your kerbside bin? Contact Council to ask for a collection if required.
