Pyrenees Shire Council is calling for members of the Lexton community to join a reference group for the Lexton Flood Study.

Council received a grant in 2023 to develop a detailed flood management plan for Lexton after the 2022 floods severely impacted the township.

“The flood events in 2022 impacted a lot of communities in our Shire and we received feedback from the community that an updated flood mitigation plan for Lexton was needed,” Pyrenees Shire Council Mayor Cr Robert Vance said.

Work is now underway to develop the flood study after Council appointed Water Technology Pty Ltd as the contractor after a competitive tender process.

“We’ll be working closely with our contractor, the Victorian Government, North Central Catchment Management Authority, and the Lexton community to investigate ways to mitigate the effects of future floods,” Cr Vance said.

As part of the process, Water Technology Pty Ltd and Council will be creating a community reference group to help inform the flood management plan.

Members of the public who were affected by the flooding in Lexton are invited to submit an expression of interest to join the community reference group.

“We’re looking for local experience of the recent floods to help us develop the flood management plan for Lexton. This along with experts from Water Technology Pty Ltd and North Central Catchment Management Authority will give us the knowledge we need to create good mitigation strategies for the future,” Cr Vance said.

It is expected that the project will help Council and the Lexton community respond to, and better recover from, future flood events.

Expressions of interest for the community reference group close at 5pm on Sunday 28 April. Interested community members can contact Emma Poyser on 1300 797 363 or pyrenees@pyrenees.vic.gov.au for more information.
