The Lexton community has celebrated the official opening of their new sporting facility, the Lexton Community Hub.

Commonwealth Government Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government and Member for Ballarat Catherine King officially opened the new hub, which the Lexton community helped plan while working closely with Pyrenees Shire Council. Ripon MP Martha Haylett and Federal Member for Wannon Dan Tehan also attended the celebration.

Pyrenees Shire Council Mayor Cr Robert Vance thanked Minister King, Ms Haylett and Mr Tehan for attending.

Cr Vance said the community’s vision for the hub was to create a multi-purpose space for social events and activities to help people in remote areas connect. He thanked Council staff including former Community Development Manager Martin Walmsley, Council’s contractors and the community for their hard work in seeing the new building to fruition.

“The result is a state-of the-art facility with a new commercial kitchen, upgraded sports change rooms, an outdoor play space and space for informal childcare and playgroups,” he said.

“The hub is a wonderful asset for the Lexton community, who are really excited about using it long into the future.”

The hub replaces amenities that were past their useful life and were no longer meeting community expectations or modern sporting facility standards.

It is anticipated the hub will enable and grow local participation in sports such as netball, AFL football, cricket and golf. It will also host a range of activities and events, providing direct and indirect economic benefits to the community, local groups and associations.

The Lexton Community Hub was completed in 2023 at a cost of $3.8 million, with financial contributions from:

  • The Commonwealth Government’s Building Better Regions Fund; Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program; and Lexton Bushfire Recovery
  • The Lexton Recreation Reserve Committee of Management
  • The Victorian Government's 2018-19 Female Friendly Facilities Fund, Community Support Fund and Lexton Bushfire Recovery.
  • Pyrenees Shire Council
